As Danny Rampling (an international house-icon) once said: ‘If you can count to four, hold a pair of headphones in the crook of your neck and drop a stylus in the groove then you too, can be a DJ. But to be a great DJ you need the ability to sense dance floor energy and direct it appropriately – to know when to rock steady and when to drop off, when to tickle and when to punch, when to go ape and when to bliss out. Cliché has it that a DJ should make love to the crowd, but only a very good DJ can provoke multiple orgasms.’
Inspired by the mixing skills of Little Louie Vega, Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo and DJ Jean and the way they bring their music, Dutch boy Matt Styles fixed up his own style instead of being a regular ‘copycat’. He stays true to house music and his sound varies from soulful, funky, sexy house to the more straight-up and prime time house.
Music has always had a deep impact on the life of Matt. Having his first experiences with nightlife at club iT in the old days, it was then that he decided to lead a life of musical expression and to lift himself to a higher state of being. Soon he bought his first Technics SL1200MK2 and a small mixer and together with an old record player he finally was able to forge his DJ-ing ahead.
Serious mixing began while organizing the concept Dansation @ Witte Theater, IJmuiden in the years ’99-’02 together with some good friends. Every time it was prompt sold out within a day. It reached its climax when editions sold out in no more than 15 minutes! The concept was a huge success in the IJmuiden-region. After this he became Ricky Rivaro’s sidekick on the radio show True House Music at ID&T Radio. These things were perfect chances to develop as a DJ. His skills just couldn’t stay unnoticed so his DJ-bookings speeded up and resulted in performances at clubs and parties like: Bloomingdale Beach @ Mysteryland, Desire 2 Dance, JackieRc, Lucien Foort’s Southend House, Sundale @ Bloomingdale and True House Music. He also became a regular seen DJ at parties organized by the energy drink company Red Bull and he got the opportunity to host his own radio show Mad Styles & Crazy Visions on KX Radio.
From 2008 Matt is one of the resident-DJ’s of the popular club Club Vie in Rotterdam. Here he met Chris Rox and Jasper Clash from Latin Lovers. This encounter has led to regular appearances on their events and when they recently got the chance to go on air with Latin Lovers on Radio Decibel they asked Matt to co-host the radio show.
Last but definitely not least Matt devoted himself more to producing his own tunes over the last couple of years. He produces under his own moniker Matt Styles and with his homie-for-life Arp3000 he makes music under the name of Artistic Styles. It’s a new era in his development as a musician and in the short time he’s been busy now he has been able to celebrate his first successes like a release on the respectable Cloud 9 label and delivering remixes for Ricky Rivaro and Quinten de Rozario. If you catch him playing one time make sure you’re ready to be seduced by musical mixing pleasure and many tasteful tunes…Dare to enjoy!
